64. Going Online: My Classes via Zoom Meeting During COVID-19 Pandemic

When we meet sudden obstacles, we find a way to resolve them. My classes were always face-to-face lessons with lots of demonstrations, and I thought online lessons would be less effective. Due to the total lock down of all gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, I decided to direct my classes to online platform from April. For three weeks, I have added/changed/evaluated the class contents in order to make them more effective in the new platform. The result? Surprisingly satisfactory!

The best part of my Zoom class is the clarity and verstility of the presentations/slides. I used to use a projector on big sceen or plasma TV screen which are still not very sharp in comparison to computer monitors. Now, directly on each participant's computer screen, they can see all images upclose in details along with my explanations, zoomed in and out. It is fantastic and my students love it! 

Now, there is one less nicer side: students miss my demonstrations. To make up this very important part, I have to invest A LOT OF TIME in preparing and recording the demonstrations aheaad and show them during the class. With the big time investment from my side, my students can see the demonstrations very clearly. Well, now they say they love the Zoom class more! But we still miss our face to face classes: the hugs, laughters, coffee..... and the beautiful Brushwood Center. I hope we can get back there again soon. 

Now, I feel confident in announcing a few new Zoom class/course options for those who are looking for some kind of online botanical art classes. I chose topics that anyone can take without prerequisites, such as composition and drawing basics. The Drawing Fundamentals will be continued as a summarized series. Class 1: An Approach to Composition in Botanical Art

70. New Botanical Watercolor Courses for Beginners on Saturdays

It will be via Zoom, continuously!  The pandemic changed our every life dramatically. We have discovered every possible way to get connected and continue our daily activities amidst the frightening uncertainty. The adjustment to online platform, Zoom, was one of the changes I made for my classes, but surprisingly, it became the favorites for my students. To compensate the indirect learning situation in the online classes, I put in extra time and efforts for the class preparation to make each class an effective learning experience. The results have been very rewarding. Both my students and I love having the classes via Zoom. So, we decided to continue the Zoom classes even though we can go back to in-person classes in USA. Paintings & Stories: 42. A Special Treat to a Lady!

Large Yellow Lady's Slipper Orchid Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens ©Heeyoung Kim Finally Finished! Some years ago, a fairly old lady approached me after she saw my paintings at a show. She 'confessed' that a bunch of Yellow Lady's Slipper Orchids thrive in her back yard. I was invited to see them. My jaw dropped, completely! They were so beautiful! I started to study them right away, but it was a bit too late. Soon, the flowers got brown spots. I was determined to study them very closely during the rest of the season. The lady's German shepherd was getting used to me in the meantime.     I had good amount of drawings, and more than enough studies, not to mention hundreds of photos taken from every possible angles. However I could not start painting. I needed more time. I needed to get to know the lady's slipper better.
